IELTS essay: Animal testing and animal experiments

Nowadays animal experiments are widely used to develop new medicines and to test the safety of other products. Some people argue that these experiments should be banned because it is morally wrong to cause animals to suffer, while others are in favour of them because of their benefits to humanity. Discuss in your IELTS essay both views and give your own opinion.

IELTS «Animal protection».

IELTS essay 1

It is hard to argue with the fact that these days animals are used in various medicine development experiments. It is said by opponents that these tests should be forbidden to prevent animals  suffering. However, proponents firmly believe that the contribution of animals research to medical science and human health is undeniable.

To begin with, the people who say that these experiments have to be stopped, claim that it is cruel and inhumane. They offer alternative methods for medical or scientific developments. Few of these examples are computer modeling, cell cultures or human volunteers. Applying these processes undoubtedly can save animals from mistreatment or even death. In addition, they assume that animals are different from human beings, that is why research on animals usually yields irrelevant results.

On the other hand, proponents state that the animal testing is very beneficial for humanity and it has enabled the development of numerous life-saving medicines for both humans and animals. Furthermore, they are convinced that there is no other alternatives and only complete live organisms are able to provide the reliable outcome. For example, it is impossible to study a beating heart in a test tube or get a computer to cough.

In conclusion, I profoundly believe that despite the vast number of benefits and contribution that animals can grant, the use still has to be minimized. In fact, as a general rule, technology always evolves and new alternative methods have to be implemented in order to reduce as much as possible the invasive and painful procedures over the animals.

IELTS essay 2

According to statistics, a huge number animals are used every year for scientific and commercial testing. Our society is divided into proponents, who support animal testing, explaining this as undeniable help  for human health and opponents, who think that animal research is cruel and morally inadmissible. In this essay I would like to discuss both these viewpoints and express my own opinion.

Proponent of animal testing say it has enabled the development of numerous life-saving treatments for both humans and animals, in addition, there is no alternative method for researching a complete living organism. They also state that the use of animals in scientific experimentation is morally permissible, because the moral status of animal is not equal to that of humans. Undoubtedly, using animals in the experimentations allows to advance knowledge and to alleviate suffering and disease in the world not only for humanity, but and for animals as well. According to this point view, the vital role played by animals in biomedical research can not be denied and stopping the research would be a crime against humanity.

Opponents of animal testing say that it is cruel and inhumane to experiment on animals and alternative methods available to researches can replace animal testing. They base their arguments on the fact that animals during the experiments are subjected to countless invasive, frightening and sometimes very painful procedures. Furthermore, the animals are so different form human beings that research on animals often yields irrelevant results, that is also ineffective in helping us to understand human physiology, predict human toxic and find useful drugs. Finally, it is morally wrong to justify animal testing by claiming the existence in humans some relevant characteristics, such as intelligence, language of consciousness, that are supposedly absent in other species.

From my perspective, studying living creatures gives the scientist an opportunity to learn how living systems work and expend our understanding of human physiology. I hope that in the near future scientific will find another non-animals tasting way for their researches.  So far, until humanity is needed in animal testing, we can help to provide strict regulators aiming to prevent the mistreatment of animals in laboratories.

IELTS essay 3

Today experiments on animals are done in vast majority in medical researches. Proponents of such works claim that it is totally beneficial both to humanity and animals, while opponents say that such experiments are cruel and unethical.

It is hard to argue with the fact that animals have made an undeniable contribution in developing medical treatment. A further point is that studying other creatures expand our knowledge of human physiology. Moreover, with development of technology less and less animals are used for experiments. Overall, such experiments play a vital part in modern medicine.

It might seem that experiments on animals have only positive sides, but it is not true. It is well-known that animals have emotions and sensitivity to pain. In addition, animals are not exactly the same as humans, that is why some animals experiments appear to be inaccurate in regard to human. In the end, such researches are called morally and ethically unacceptable practice by some people.

In conclusion, animal experiments can not be banned due to nonexistence of other equal alternatives. Nevertheless, computer modeling and help of volunteers should be used as wide as possible to reduce the suffering of animals.
